Brief itinerary:

Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau (L/D)

Day 2: Mai Chau - Son La (B/L/D)

Day 3: Son La - Dien Bien Phu (B/L/D)

Day 4: Dien Bien Phu - Lai Chau (B/L/D)

Day 5: Lai Chau - Lao Cai- Hanoi(B/L/D)

Detailed itinerary:

Day 1: Hanoi - Mai Chau (160km/4 hours) (L/D)

Once out of the Red River Delta, which brims with traditional farming activity, we pass through limestone monoliths and into foothills populated by Muong people. We head straight at the main range before breaching a high and beautiful forested pass, which descends into the hidden valley of Mai Chau where we spend the night with friends in a traditional Thai stilt house in Pom Coong village.

Day 2: Mai Chau - Son La (200km /6 hours) (B/L/D)

On good road looking high over distant mountains we head up into a forested region populated by H'mong people before descending into a mountainous tea-growing region. Soon after we follow a long valley floor covered in a sea of rice dotted with Black Thai villages all the way to Son La and its bargain-filled market.

Day 3: Son La - Dien Bien Phu (200Km/8 hours) (B/L/D)

Have breakfast then head to the former battle ground- Dien Bien Phu, this is one of the most remote parts of Viet Nam, famous for the Vietnam - French war.

Riding over the Pha Din Pass, we get to Tuan Giao, break for lunch. Upon arrival in Dien Bien Phu, we visit Muong Thanh bridge and Dien Bien Phu prison where many Vietnamese patriots were held during the Vietnam - France war.

Day 4: Dien Bien Phu - Tam Duong (200Km/7hours) (B/L/D)

The most demanding and remote section of the ride takes us upstream along the left side of a Black River tributary through a forest on a bumpy dirt road past isolated pockets of Tay, Thai, H'mong and Mang people, before breaching a pass to enter the Tam Duong plain. Covered in shark's teeth like limestone karts. We will visit a Mang village near Sin Ho and you can help the local people by buying their handmade products.

Day 5: Lai Chau - Sapa - Lao Cai (130Km/4hours) (B/L/D)

Today you have a chance to visit Sapa, one of the most beautiful tourist sites in Vietnam where more and more people are coming at least once in their life.

Have lunch in Sapa and you have short break to discover the town on your own. In the afternoon, we ride to Lao Cai for the night train to Hanoi.

Overnight on the train.

We arrive Hanoi around 6:00am the next day. The trip ends.
